Liputan6.com, Jakarta The recent eviction of people residing alongside the banks of Ciliwung river of Kampung Pulo situated in East Jakarta has attracted the attention of a large proportion of nationwide audience. This is because chaos was created among discontented residents and followed by the potent clash with the authority. Surely Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama instruction has carried with it some violent repercussion, but his decision was not without prior anticipation to popular outcry vocalizing rejection.

According to the Chief of Jakarta Police, Officer Tito Karnavian, his men followed instructions accordingly and should not be held accountable for staging provocations that ultimately led to such violent clash. They way they dealt with the angry mass was in line with the procedure and the exacerbation was caused by perpetrators that were obviously not part of the assigned force.

"Police force always comply with the standards that are set universally," he said, Tuesday (25/8/2015).

Tito further explains how preventive measures are not uncommon in his force and have been their mission for day to day basis. Preventive measures can come in many forms: mediation, negotiation, people- government talks.

"Surely preventive measures are not immune to the potential emergence of repressiveness. peaceful conclusion sometimes cannot be reached and this is where violence takes over," Tito concluded. (Akp/Rie)
