Liputan6.com, Lamongan - A teacher in Lamongan, East Java, received censure after punishing her students by making them partially bald. The reason was the way they wore hijab.

The teacher saw dozens of girls were not wearing "ciput" which is an additional hair cover to wear alongside hijab. As a result, the hairs are still visible although the girls already wore hijabs. The teacher then took an electric hair trimmer to shave their hairs.

The incident happened on August 28 in a public school, not Islamic school. Wearing hijab is optional in Indonesian public schools.

The headmaster admitted the incident did happen, but he refused to say that the girls were completely bald.

"Not bald. It's not nice to call it bald. Only partial shaving," said Harto, the headmaster of Sukodadi 1 State Middle School.

Harto also said the teacher might only incidentally make them partially bald because she used an electric trimmer.

"So perhaps it got carried over," said Harto.

Parents of 10 students protested the teacher's behavior and Harto attempted to mediate the situation.

The teacher admitted that she was wrong, but she is currently suspended by the government's Education Bureau in Lamongan.

"It was a wrong action. That we have reported to the bureau and now the teacher has been withdrawn to the bureau to receive guidance," said Harto on Wednesday.
