The Last of Us: Veteran Indonesian Actress Christine Hakim Appears on HBO Series with Solid Performance

Liputan6.com, Jakarta - Veteran Indonesian actress, Christine Hakim, has expanded her acting prowess to HBO's The Last of Us. The series is based on the immensely popular post-apocalyptic games series with the same name which scored 95/100 on Metacritic. 

The Last of Us tells the story of humanity's struggle against the mutant strain of Cordyceps fungus which infect humans into deadly creatures.

In the HBO's adaptation, Christine Hakim portrays a scientist named Ratna in Jakarta. She is called by the military to inspect people who got infected by the mutant fungus. Knowing that no cure is available, Ratna provides a fatalistic solution to wipe out the city. 

Christine Hakim, now 66, has been performing as an actress for a half century. Her first feature film, Cinta Pertama (First Love), won Citra Awards at the Indonesian Film Festival in 1973.

Previously, Christine also shared screen with Julia Roberts in the film adaptation of Eat, Pray, Love memoir directed by Ryan Murphy. In 2021, she starred in Vengeance Is Mine, All Others Pay Cash, a film adaptation of a novel written by Eka Kurniawan.

Born in Jambi Province, Christine Hakim is another veteran Southeast Asian actress who graces the Hollywood.

Most recently, the Malaysia-born Michelle Yeoh also took the spot as the winner of Golden Globe Awards for her masterful and daring performance in Everything Everywhere All at Once. 

Yeoh may be relatively new to the mainstream Hollywood, especially for the younger generation, but she is actually a leading figure in the Asian film industries, particularly in East and Southeast Asia. She played alongside the iconic Jackie Chan in the Police Story and Supercop movies, and her extraordinary film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon received the Hong Kong Film Awards, Golden Globe Awards, and Academy Awards.

Both Michelle Yeoh and Christine Hakim are not only important representations to showcase the talents of Southeast Asia, but they are also trail-blazers to inspire more Southeast Asian talents to hone their crafts and bravely play in the international level.
